I was frozen
and wished it were May
and that I were walking a marshy road
between blowing tall reeds and cattails
red-winged blackbirds riding the breeze.
But it’s winter now
and may never be May
and I’m rushing an icy sidewalk
cars parked in a salted white street
for someone to ignite their engines.
Millions of cars
and millions of blackbirds
make me wonder
who will win?
or the reeds?
